Fire extinguishers that require a hydrostatic test are pressure tested to verify its strength against unwanted leaks or ruptures. 

The extinguisher should be emptied and subjected to the applicable internal and external examination procedures as detailed in the manufacturer’s service manual and NFPA-10.

Q: How Often Do You Do Fire Extinguisher Hydrostatic Testing?

Extinguishers are hydrostatically tested every 5 & 12 years from its manufacture date. However, if at any time a fire extinguisher shows evidence of dents, mechanical injury, or corrosion to the extent as to indicate weakness, it should be condemned or hydrostatically tested.
