William F. Channing and Moses G. Farmer worked together to develop the first city-wide fire alarm system. This system operated off of the telegraph machine, and it was installed in the city of Boston in 1852. Alarm boxes in local neighborhoods could be activated in case of a fire, and they would send telegraph signals to the city’s central monitoring station. The central station would then ring bells and alert city inhabitants of the emergency. 

Three: The greatest cause of residential fire alarm failure is batteries

The fire alarms in your home are either hardwired, operate off of batteries, or both. NFPA statistics show that in over half of reported home fires where the smoke detectors were present but didn’t sound, it was because the batteries were missing or disconnected. The most common reason for this was that homeowners had removed them to avoid nuisance alarms.

Even if your cooking sets off your fire alarm a few times a week, don’t remove the battery. Take it as a sign that you need to leave the cooking to someone else.
