What To Expect From Orlando Fire Extinguisher Hydrostatic Testing

Is it time for your Orlando fire extinguisher hydrostatic testing? We don’t want anything to catch you off guard, so we made this 5-minute guide so you would know what to expect.

A fire extinguisher is only worth anything if it actually works. Otherwise, it’s essentially an oversized paperweight. Scheduling regular maintenance, testing, and inspections are an important part of caring for your fire protection systems, and that includes Orlando fire extinguisher hydrostatic testing. While this service only needs to happen every few years, it’s one that you can’t miss.

Orlando Fire Extinguisher Hydrostatic Testing: How it Works

Hydrostatic testing is conducted on rechargeable fire extinguishers to ensure that the cylinder is still able to hold pressure. It checks for overall strength as well as leaks. A fire extinguisher that isn’t able to withstand the pressure during normal operations is a safety hazard and should no longer be in use.

What Happens During A Fire Extinguisher Hydrostatic Test?

When it’s time for your fire extinguisher to go through hydrostatic testing, it is given an internal and external examination. This includes the removal of its components, and it’s then emptied and filled with water. The cylinder is placed behind a protective barrier and is pressurized according to the requirements of the manufacturer.

During the pressurization, the technician who is conducting the test will observe the test gauge for any loss of pressure. If the technician sees that there is a loss of pressure, that would mean there is a potential leak and the extinguisher should be removed from service.

If the extinguisher passes the hydrostatic test it is ready to be refilled with the new fire suppressant material. The unit is then re-pressurized to the correct pressure, the decals are updated to indicate the hydrostatic testing has been successful, and the tamper seal is replaced. Since your Orlando fire extinguisher hydrostatic testing is finished and your extinguisher is ready for use, it can be returned to service.
