National Fire Prevention Week 2023

National Fire Prevention Week 2023 takes place October 8th – 14th. At DynaFire, we join with NFPA to focus on fire safety with education, activities, and tips. Here are some ways we’re committed to promoting fire safety during this important week.

As you know, the DynaFire team is all about Fire & Life Safety 365 days a year. We love to educate our clients and the community about how they can prioritize fire safety in their daily lives. And during the second week of October, we pay special attention to education with National Fire Prevention Week 2023.

Fire Prevention Week (FPW) commemorates the Great Chicago Fire that started on October 8, 1871, resulting in widespread destruction. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge recognized Fire Prevention Week nationally, making it our country’s longest-standing public health observance. During this week, people of all ages learn vital fire safety skills, and firefighters provide essential education to minimize fire-related harm.

Here are some key points from FPW that you can share with your employees and encourage them to share with their families.

Cooking Safety

This year’s campaign is “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention.™” This theme aims to educate everyone about simple ways to stay safe in the kitchen. Many cooking safety resources are available, including tip sheets, a kid-free zone marker, and an FPW coloring sheet.

Remember these important rules when cooking:

  • Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove, and keep a lid nearby in case of fire.
  • Watch what you heat, and never leave the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop.
  • Implement a kid-free zone at least three feet from the stove or anywhere hot food or beverages are being prepared.

Home Fire Safety

Take this opportunity to review your home fire safety plan. If you still need to establish one, note these tips to practice with your family. Creating a plan is simple with these guidelines in mind.

  • Draw a simple map of your home.
  • Find two ways out of each room.
  • Check all windows and doors to make sure they’re safe to access.
  • Test your smoke alarms.
  • Choose a safe outside meeting place.
  • Post instructions in the home where everyone can see them.
  • Practice a fire drill twice a year.

These tips also translate seamlessly into a fire safety plan for your office. If you don’t already have one, we can help you create an evacuation plan that helps keep your building’s occupants safe in the event of a fire.

More Resources

Because fire safety awareness should start as early as possible, National Fire Prevention Week 2023 includes plenty of materials that the kiddos can use to have fun while learning about fire safety. Coloring pages, mazes, Mad Libs, and more, featuring everyone’s favorite fire safety spokesdog, Sparky the Fire Dog, are a creative way to help kids increase their fire safety awareness.

The videos page is stocked full with videos like Lessons from the Great Chicago Fire, the Fire Safety Dance, The Science of Fire, and more, all featuring Sparky and others who make fire safety fun!

What educational program would be complete without online games and apps? Sparky has match games, brain teasers, and tons of other ways to keep the youngsters entertained while helping them learn. They didn’t have these when we were kids!

Fire Prevention Week At Work

A great way to spread fire safety education throughout your office would be to share a fire safety video with your staff every week. The FPW website has many to choose from, so take a look and see which ones would most benefit your business. There are even videos that feature messages in American Sign Language.
