If you want your fire extinguisher to do more than serve as an office art installation, our Windermere fire extinguisher service technicians can use the latest techniques to keep them functioning optimally.
We love seeing fire extinguishers adorning the walls of our clients’ offices. We could stare at them for hours, but what we’re really there for is to inspect them and make sure that they do what they were designed to do in case of emergency.
At DynaFire, we love all things Fire & Life Safety, and to that end, we are constantly keeping up with the latest techniques and technology to keep our clients safe. Here’s how our safety obsession translates to our Windermere fire extinguisher service.
Proper Inspections
Owning a fire extinguisher, or a dozen fire extinguishers, isn’t enough to keep you, your business, and your employees safe. You must inspect and maintain your fire extinguisher regularly to see if it needs to be serviced or replaced.
The NFPA recommends that fire extinguishers should be inspected monthly. This visual inspection can be performed by a designated employee; they don’t have to be certified in fire protection. Each inspection should verify that:
- The fire extinguishers are in their designated locations
- Proper signage is posted and easily visible for each fire extinguisher
- Each fire extinguisher is easily accessible
- The pressure gauge is in the operable position
- The fire extinguisher is full – this test can be done by weighing the fire extinguisher
Regular Maintenance
Each fire extinguisher should be tested regularly to ensure proper performance. This job must be performed by a certified fire safety company like DynaFire. We make this task easy to check off of your list because our Windermere fire extinguisher service team can put your business on a regular schedule. You will see us every few months and we will run through our checklist after we have verified that your fire extinguishers are in good working order.
When we perform fire extinguisher services, we provide the following types of testing and maintenance:
Annual Fire Extinguisher Maintenance
When a fire extinguisher is installed, then every year after, it needs to be inspected and tested to make sure it works well in case there is a fire. A careful look at the fire extinguisher will show if it needs repair. If any maintenance is required, we will take care of that for you.
Six-Year Fire Extinguisher Maintenance
Stored-pressure fire extinguishers that are on a 12-year hydrostatic testing schedule should be emptied and fully inspected, including all parts, then refilled to the manufacturer’s specifications every six years.
Five And 12-Year Hydrostatic Testing
Hydrostatic testing is performed on fire extinguishers every five and 12 years. This type of test is similar to the six-year test with the addition of a pressure test. If our tests reveal any weaknesses, cracks, or other damage, it is time for a new fire extinguisher. We can help with that too!
Following this inspection and testing schedule will keep your fire extinguishers in tip-top condition and ready for action if they are needed.
Tips For Fire Extinguisher Use
Speaking of using a fire extinguisher, it’s important to know how to use one before you need to know how to use one. The PASS method is generally recommended as the most effective way to use a fire extinguisher. It works when extinguishing a smaller fire (like that time Jeff tried to cook a hot pocket in the toaster) or by allowing egress from a building in the case of a larger fire.
P – Pull the pin
A – Aim low
S – Squeeze the handle slowly
S – Sweep the nozzle back and forth
If you need training on how to properly use a fire extinguisher, our Windermere fire extinguisher service personnel can set up a training session with your staff so that everyone is prepared in case they ever need to use one.
