Put down your magic 8 ball and read on to discover answers to the top questions you should ask before hiring an Orlando fire extinguisher service company. Should that company be DynaFire? All signs point to yes!
Every business should have fire extinguishers placed throughout the facility to be your staff’s first line of defense if there’s a fire. From the smoking space heater (Janice is always cold!) to a full building evacuation, fire extinguishers act as a quick barrier between people and flames.
Maybe you know that your fire extinguishers need to be serviced; maybe you don’t. But we’re here today to shed some light on what questions you should ask before hiring an Orlando fire extinguisher service company.
Here are the basic questions you need answers to so that your fire extinguishers are properly serviced. Grab a pen and paper (or just screenshot this blog).
Question #1: How Often Do Fire Extinguishers Need To Be Inspected?
Fire extinguishers should be inspected when installed and every month afterward. It’s a more manageable job than you may think – even Janice, with her cold feet, can handle it. Just make sure that the staffer assigned to perform visual inspections each month looks for the following:
- Ensure the fire extinguisher is in its designated place.
- Ensure the fire extinguisher is visible and has signage indicating its location.
- Ensure you can easily access the fire extinguisher.
- Check that the fire extinguisher’s pressure gauge is within the operable range.
- Verify that the fire extinguisher is full by lifting or weighing it.
- For wheeled fire extinguishers, inspect the tires, wheels, carriage, hose, and nozzle for any issues.
- If it’s a non-rechargeable fire extinguisher, test the push-to-test pressure indicators.
Question #2: How Often Do Fire Extinguishers Need Service?
In addition to monthly visual inspections, your fire extinguishers must be serviced regularly by certified technicians like those at DynaFire. Once a year, our technicians can swing by in one of our fancy trucks to thoroughly examine your fire extinguishers.
These yearly service appointments can determine if there has been any physical damage or change to a fire extinguisher’s condition that may prevent it from operating correctly. If our techs find an issue with your fire extinguisher, they can recommend and perform any necessary services.
Question #3: What Is Hydrostatic Testing?
In a hydrostatic test, a fire extinguisher is pressure tested to verify its strength against unwanted leaks or ruptures. These tests require the fire extinguisher to be fully emptied and subjected to internal and external examinations according to the manufacturer’s service manual and NFPA-10 requirements. If a fire extinguisher fails a hydrostatic test, it must be retired.
Hydrostatic testing should be performed every five and 12 years from the manufacture date. If you’re not sure when your fire extinguishers were last tested, we can help you figure it out; then we can put your fire extinguisher fleet on a regular testing schedule so you’ll never need to worry about them working when you need them to.
Question #4: How Long Do Fire Extinguishers Last?
The average fire extinguisher can last between 10 and 12 years with proper maintenance. After 12 years, even if a fire extinguisher is in good working order, we recommend that it be retired and replaced.
Rechargeable fire extinguishers have a longer lifespan than disposable ones. Instead of replacing them every 10-12 years, you need to have them recharged every six years for optimal function.
