Diversity in Preparedness: National Preparedness Month 2024

As National Preparedness Month approaches, the call for inclusive disaster readiness resonates louder than ever. DynaFire joins with FEMA to recognize this important month for Fire & Life Safety.

National Preparedness Month is an observance in September, and is a crucial reminder to individuals and communities nationwide about the importance of preparedness for emergencies and disasters.

In 2024, the spotlight is on the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities, highlighting their unique preparedness challenges and the need for targeted resources to bolster resilience.

FEMA’s Commitment to Community Resilience

In her recent address, Deanne Criswell, Administrator of FEMA, underscored the agency’s unwavering commitment to enhancing community resilience amidst escalating climate-related threats.

FEMA’s cornerstone initiative, the Ready Campaign, is pivotal in disseminating essential disaster preparedness information nationwide. This campaign zeroes in on underserved groups each year, ensuring equitable access to critical preparedness resources.

Spotlight on AANHPI Communities for 2024

For National Preparedness Month 2024, FEMA spotlights the AANHPI communities. This focused initiative addresses the unique barriers, including language and cultural considerations, often inhibiting effective disaster preparedness among these groups.

Surprisingly, less than 40% of Asian Americans believe current preparedness efforts are practical, highlighting the urgent need for tailored outreach and education.

Culturally Competent Preparedness Efforts

Aligned with President Biden’s proclamation of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, FEMA is steadfast in developing culturally competent preparedness materials. These efforts are designed to empower AANHPI communities with the tools and knowledge to mitigate disaster risks proactively. By bridging language and cultural gaps, FEMA aims to foster a more resilient and prepared society.
