What Happens During Fire Extinguisher Hydrostatic Testing?

Your fire extinguisher’s hydrostatic test will start with an internal and external examination, just like we would do during regular maintenance. Following this examination, the extinguisher will have most of its components removed, leaving only the shell and the hose. 

After this, the extinguisher is filled with water (or another compatible non-compressible fluid – it’s like chemistry class all over again) and pressurized to the appropriate pressure for the amount of time designated by the manufacturer. Following testing, the extinguisher is completely dried, reassembled, and recharged.

What Are You Looking For?

During testing, our technicians are checking for signs of leaks, permanent movement of couplings, or distortion. If any of these things are noted, the extinguisher will need to be removed from service and replaced with a new one.
